Felix hired as Men's Basketball assistant coach

New Orleans native Javan Felix prepped at St. Augustine before playing a four-year career at the University of Texas

NEW ORLEANS – Loyola University New Orleans men's basketball coach Stacy Hollowell announced the hiring of Javan Felix as the team's new assistant coach Monday.

"I am excited to add Javan to our staff," Hollowell said. "He will bring a nice mix of recruiting, player development, preparation and organization to our team. Javan has spent time playing for and learning from a number of great coaches and will bring a unique perspective to our group."

The New Orleans native joins the Loyola men's basketball program that's coming off one of its most successful seasons in school history, advancing to the NAIA National Championship Quarterfinals for the first time since 1946. With the season quickly approaching, Felix plans to hit the ground running to help the Wolf Pack reach their fourth straight national tournament and advance further on the national stage.

"I am very excited for this opportunity and I'm ready to get to work," Felix said. "I hope to provide a level of playing experience and knowledge that I've gained over the years to help the program be productive and successful. I'm eager to get to work and happy to be a part of the Wolf Pack program."

Felix, a New Orleans native, prepped at St. Augustine before turning in a four-year career at the University of Texas. He led Purple Knights to a 5A State Championship while winning the 5A Player of the Year award during his junior season. At Texas, Felix played in 132 games with 78 starts, averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 assists and 2.1 rebounds throughout his career with the Longhorns.

After his collegiate career, Felix played professionally for the KK Gorica in the Croatian professional basketball league in 2016-2017, then he played in the NBA's G League for the Oklahoma City Thunder and Los Angeles Lakers organizations from 2017 to 2020.

"I had the good fortune to coach Javan at the University of Texas and highly recommend him for the position of assistant coach," Former Texas head coach Shaka Smart said. " He was one of the most intelligent basketball players I have ever coached, a diligent worker, and a terrific teammate."

Loyola is set to start the season Oct. 23.
