The Loyola University New Orleans swim team headed to the LSU Natatorium on Friday evening to kick off the 2017 season to square off against NCAA DI Tulane University and the host Tigers.
Friday was a great season-opening test for the young Wolf Pack as both the Green Wave and LSU sent their best swimmers to the event. "This was a very good meet for us," said Wolf Pack head coach Thomas Natal. "We were very fast on both sides and we swam well as a team against very tough competition."
For the men, Loyola's Salvador James III led the Wolf Pack with two NAIA qualifying times in Baton Rouge. The sophomore's 53.25 in the 100 backstroke earned Trey his first NAIA A-cut of the season before he clocked a 1:58.49 in the 200 IM to grab his second A-cut time of the meet.
Tim Buisson (SR/Hattiesburg, Miss.) notched finishing times of 1:02.30 in the 100 breast and a 2:28.85 in the 200 breast while Blaise Wise (SO/Luling , La.) tallied a 2:08.5 in the 200 breast event. Making their collegiate debuts, Jack Jackson (21.81) and Jack Laughlin (22.84) each posted solid performances in the 50 freestyle. The quartet of James, Buisson, Jackson and Warren Massimini (SO/Metairie, La.) clocked a 1:38.24 in the 200 medley relay while Samuel Vasquez (FR/Huntsville, Ala.)'s 48:73 in the 100 free landed the freshman in second place overall.
Paige Carter paced the women's squad on Friday by tallying two NAIA standard times inside the LSU Natatorium. The sophomore's 1:59.12 in the 200 free was nearly five seconds faster than the NAIA A-cut time while her 5:17.97 in the 500 free bested the standard time by nearly 10 seconds.
Making her Wolf Pack debut, Kamryn Alexander (FR/Round Rock, Tex.) recorded a 1:01.95 in 100 back while Katie Szum tallied a 1:13.46 in the 100 breast. In the 50 free, Carolyn Ives (SR/Carrollton, Ga.) touched the wall in 25:13, just ahead of Elizabeth Skinner (FR/Lafayette, La.) (25.20) and Cameryn Simon (SO/Lafayette, La.) (26.02). Kamy Alexander's time of 2:14.74 in the 200 back landed the newcomer in seventh overall before the group of Ives, Skinner, Carter, and Simon banned together to notch a 3:48.40 in the 400 free.
Both Wolf Pack teams will head to Pensacola, Florida on October 20 as the men take on Thomas University while the women battle both Thomas University and the University of West Florida.
