The senior finished tied for fourth (+2) through 11 holes of a weather-shortened opening round.
After becoming the first individual to qualify for the national championship in program history earlier this month, Loyola University New Orleans senior Julchen Narwark (SR/Buchholz in der Nordheide, .de) headed to the PGA National Golf Course in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida on Tuesday morning to participate in day one of the 2017 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship.
Narwark is making her second career national tournament appearance for the Wolf Pack, as she was a part of the 2014 squad that became the only Loyola women's golf team to ever qualify for the NAIA National Championship when the team hit the greens at Wilderness Ridge in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Along with the stellar competition, individuals on Tuesday also had to contend with less than ideal weather conditions which threatened to cut the opening round short. Following a one-hour delay, it was decided to end play early on Tuesday and have those golfers still on the course finish their round early tomorrow morning.
Despite dealing with difficult weather conditions throughout the entirety of her afternoon, Narwark played brilliantly in her first-ever individual championship appearance. Julchen's day was cut short after 11 holes but not before the Germany native put up an impressive score of 45 (+2) to end the weather-shortened round tied for fourth and just two strokes off the lead. Narwark's T4 placing on Tuesday was tied with Wayland Baptist's Natalie Ugalde as the best finish of any athlete competing in the tournament as an individual.
Indiana Tech's Courtney Dye and Aleesha Smith from William Carey are tied for the lead after day one with both athletes shooting an even 72 through 18 holes. Oklahoma City sits atop the team leaderboard with a 306 (+18), taking the five-stroke advantage over Northwestern Ohio (+23) into Wednesday's action.
Narwark will finish out her first round at PGA National tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. before starting her second round immediately following.
