The Loyola University New Orleans men's golf team embarked on the Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, Alabama on Monday morning to begin play at the 2017 Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Men's Golf Championship.
The Wolf Pack played brilliantly on day one of the three-day tournament, carding a program record low 297 (+13) to end the day in sixth place.
Featuring the top three individual finishers on Monday, No. 3 Dalton State has built a sizable lead over the rest of the field after day one, finishing Monday with a 278 (-6) to finish an impressive 12 strokes ahead of second place Faulkner University.
Dalton State's S.M. Lee, P.J. Shields and Ben Rebne all share the lead after Monday's round, with each carding a 68 to wrap up the first 18 holes at -3.
Philip Nijoka (SO/Houston, Texas) is leading Loyola after the first round with a 71 (E) to finish day one tied for sixth.
Mark Nijoka (SO/Houston, Texas) and Ryan Hicks (SO/Santa Monica, Calif.) both shot a 75 (+4) to tie for 21st while Jose Perez (SO/Pichincha, Ecuador ) wrapped up Monday tied for 25th with a 76 (+5). Jack Dickson (FR/Oldsmar, Fla.) rounded out the Loyola finishers on Monday, carding an 84 (+13) to sit the freshman in 45th heading into Tuesday.
